Social Media - What Facebook and Twitter Can Do For Your Business
I want to talk to you about social networking and social media. This is new territory for a lot of small businesses, but it is emerging. It is going to triple next year. The forecast was for nearly 1 million small businesses to use some sort of targeted social media advertising in 2009. That means by the end of 2010 there will be another 3 million. The networking potential is huge.
Let's talk about what social media is not. It is not the only avenue to pursue when advertising your business. It is not the only contact you should have with prospective clients and partners. It is not the sole way to work your business plan.
However, social media is another tool to stay connected to your contacts. It's another tool to keep you connected to your network.
Use it to build the initial contact and break the ice with a new client. If you already have a conversation or a topic going online, there will be something to talk about from the start for the transition to a face to face, coffee or phone meeting
Mirna Bard (see Ivan Misner's podcast #117) described social networking as a cocktail party on steroids. There are lots of conversations to keep track of and everyone can hear what you are saying. Make sure you are saying the right things and that your posts add value to the conversation.
Remember, that the same rules apply online as in real life. We have to establish a relationship long before we can even attempt to close the deal. Building relationships, adding value and giving back to your clients are what social media is all about. We can have intelligent conversation, impart new knowledge about our field, company or interests and make those connections that will help everyone out long after the sale is made.
Remember the networking mantra - Visibility, Credibility and then Profitability.
Social networking provides that extra avenue to connect with your clients. You can talk to them whenever you are thinking about it, instantly. It adds a connection that is much faster than face to face, email and telephone calls. It is instant and convenient for both parties.
Social networking should be a part of every business's networking strategy.
